  1. I agree that the potential for advantage from increased availability for natural gas is rather large; however, an important obstacle is the American resistance to the fracking process used to extract the natural gas. Many Americans are claiming "not in my backyard" in regards to the questionably damaging chemicals that are necessary for production.
  2. I think the answer lies in the vast alumni network that McKinsey has amassed over the years. It is no secret that many key people currently with vast influence over the global business network began their careers as management consultants and of the Big Three McKinsey has the most employees and has been around the longest. I'm interested in reading the book and seeing if it touches on this key aspect of the company.
  3. Tom, I'm curious as to your thoughts as to why this is the case. Are there the same consequences to "switching" as there are in other, more developed countries? I automatically think of cell phones and the ridiculous contracts that are put in to place to prevent this problem from happening. T-Mobile has recently started a new advertising campaign in the US encouraging consumers to "break up" with their mobile carrier and let T-Mobile worry about the switching costs. Despite the costs associated, what are the ramifications of this culture? Has this trend increased accountability? Or have any measures been implemented to increase customer retention? - Ashley
  4. I read this article a couple of months ago and have yet to forget about it. The possibilities involved with this technology are truly endless. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/12/uber-might-be-more-valuable-than-facebook.html Thoughts?
  5. Eric, Unfortunately, I will have to disagree with you. I have seen prominent students from traditional business backgrounds being passed over for liberal arts students with no quantitative background from prestigious universities. With consulting, I find that recruiters are often more interested in soft skills and relevant work experience than specific majors. That being said, an accounting or finance major is extremely valuable and would be looked at favorably; however, I don't believe that course of study is necessarily a limiting factor. - Ashley
  6. Times have changed since 1974 and it seems logical that McKinsey's recommendations would change as well. Although I can't say I am familiar with the NHS on an institutional level, I have heard about the ever increasing problem of medical tourists, coming to the country to "take advantage" of the free services. Due to this concern, students studying in London (such as myself) will soon have to pay an additional fee upon entering the country to cover potential medical costs and the resources of the NHS.
  7. Very interesting! I have heard amazing things about Deloitte University from recruiters at NYU as well as employees who attempt to come up with any excuse to go back for training. Apparently the one located outside of Dallas more reflects an all inclusive resort than a place to do business. One of the recruiters was mentioning that the schedule for programming at Deloitte University is fully booked for the next three years. * On a note so exciting note, I heard a story about a new hire who was starting training at Deloitte University and took a little bit too much advantage of the open bar. His drunken debauchery led to the termination of his contract.
  8. Hello everyone! My name is Ashley Sherman and I am a student at NYU Stern studying Business and Political Economy. I joined the Hub for all of the amazing consulting resources and look forward to learning more about the profession through all of you. The management consulting industry has always retained this elusive mystery, particularly in New York, so hopefully through this initiative will help to break down those barriers. My current consulting experience primarily lies in participating in various case competitions through NYU and networking with those firms which target my school (sadly not all of them). On a more personal level, I enjoy contemporary art, 19th century literature, and indulging in lavish food that I can't afford. This year I am studying abroad in London and will be continuing my studies in Shanghai this fall before returning to New York. I can't wait to meet everyone and start some engaging debates. Feel free to personal message me if you want to talk individually! - Ashley
