According to BCG, this cost advantage has already started to boost investment and employment. For example, low electricity prices are encouraging investment in energy-intensive industries like steel, and the cost advantage is amplified by the fact that US competitiveness was already improving due to low labor costs (relative to other developed countries), rapidly rising wages in China, and high productivity. ashleysherman Posted February 17, 2014 Report Share Posted February 17, 2014 I agree that the potential for advantage from increased availability for natural gas is rather large; however, an important obstacle is the American resistance to the fracking process used to extract the natural gas. Many Americans are claiming "not in my backyard" in regards to the questionably damaging chemicals that are necessary for production. There is an obvious conflict between the interests of fracking companies (which profit now), and local communities (which may suffer harm a number of years down the line).
