Career Gravity: Why Depth, Not Speed, Matters in Your 20s

In the early years of a career, the pressure to move quickly can feel overwhelming. Promotions, high-visibility projects, and exposure to senior leadership are often seen as markers of success. The faster you move, the more impressive your path appears, at least on paper.

For ambitious young professionals, especially in high-performance environments like consulting or tech, it’s easy to become consumed by the race: from analyst to associate, from associate to manager, as quickly as possible.

But speed is not the same as substance. And over time, what truly sets one career apart from another is not how fast someone rose, it’s how deeply they’re trusted, how consistently they deliver, and how widely their judgment is respected. This is what I call career gravity.

Career gravity isn’t about prestige, title, or presence in a meeting. It’s about the silent pull your work has in a room, even when you’re not in it. It’s the confidence colleagues have when they ask for your view on a complex issue. It’s the moment when leadership chooses to involve you, not because you pushed for a seat at the table, but because they know your contribution will elevate the discussion. It doesn’t come quickly. And it rarely comes with fanfare. But once you have it, it tends to last.

Depth Over Appearances

Early in your career, it’s tempting to optimize for visibility. You might seek out cross-functional roles, volunteer for every presentation, or lobby for inclusion in strategic meetings. And while these opportunities can be valuable, they often create an illusion of progress that isn’t backed by real depth. Working across many areas can give you exposure. You might learn the language of the business, but not yet its logic. You may know the frameworks, but not how they hold up when plans go sideways.

Career gravity comes from a different kind of learning. It’s slower, more deliberate, and often less visible. It’s built when you take ownership of a problem and stay with it long enough to understand its root causes. It forms when you see a project through to implementation. It grows when you take the time to understand the context behind a decision, the constraints that a team is operating under, and the unintended consequences of change. That kind of experience is hard-earned. It requires patience, curiosity, and humility. But in the long run, it matters far more than polished slide decks or early promotions.

The Quiet Strength of Staying Close to Reality

One of the most underappreciated advantages young professionals have is their access to the front line. Whether you’re building models, tracking project execution, or shadowing decision-makers, you’re closer than you think to the real drivers of performance. But proximity is only valuable if you pay attention. The best early-career consultants and analysts aren’t the ones who only think about the next step up, they’re the ones who take time to observe how things actually get done. They listen closely in meetings. They understand that the way people work matters as much as what they’re working on.

The more you understand reality, whether it be operational gaps, team dynamics, or systems issues, the more useful your insights become. This builds a credibility that doesn’t depend on your job title. In fact, many professionals earn informal influence well before their first managerial role. They do so by consistently bringing grounded, relevant, and practical thinking into the room. Over time, their reputation for sound judgment precedes them, and becomes more valuable than any fast-track promotion could have been.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with moving quickly. Some professionals do rise fast and grow deeply at the same time. But that combination is rare. What’s more common, and more sustainable, is a path where you intentionally slow down to learn, reflect, and build strength where it counts. That strength becomes a foundation for long-term career growth.

Influence Begins Before Authority

For most professionals in their twenties, formal authority is limited. You’re not managing teams or setting strategy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t influence outcomes. Influence begins not with position, but with how much people trust your thinking. Do you understand the problem? Do you engage with the right level of detail? Do you bring insight, not just observations? The professionals who do these things well build career gravity, even before gaining any formal authority.

Credibility is the currency of influence, and is built by delivering actionable insights in messy, real-world situations. You earn trust when you understand the constraints others face. When you adjust your recommendations to fit the organization’s readiness for change. When you quietly support a project team through the friction of implementation, not just during the planning phase. These behaviors don’t make headlines, but they do get remembered.

At some point, colleagues and leaders stop seeing you as “junior talent” and start treating you as a trusted operator. That shift doesn’t happen because you asked for it. It happens because you showed, repeatedly, that you can be relied upon.

Let Your Work Speak for You

There’s a common saying: “Don’t be the person who needs to remind others of their value, be the one whose work speaks for you.” That principle is central to career gravity. While external signals of success, such as titles, accolades, and awards, are helpful, they’re benefit is temporary. What lasts is your reputation for good judgment, reliable delivery, and the way you made others better through your work.

It’s easy to confuse forwards motion with progress, especially in a world that rewards speed. But careers are marathons not sprints. The professionals who become indispensable over time aren’t necessarily the fastest, they’re the ones who invested in depth when everyone else was rushing to get ahead. They took time to learn the business, understand what drives outcomes, and build relationships rooted in mutual respect. Over time, that kind of investment pays off in opportunities, access, and impact that no title alone can guarantee.

So, if you’re in the early chapters of your career, remember that speed is not the only metric. Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is to slow down enough to learn deliberately, deliver meaningfully, and build something no one can take away from you, your own career gravity.
